  • Narratives Of Nonviolence: The Stories We Tell

Author/Activist Rivera Sun will join Portland State University and Professor Tom Hastings’ special events to offer a virtual talk about the importance of sharing stories of both everyday and extraordinary acts of nonviolence. Drawing from her experience as the editor of Nonviolence News, she will comment on the myths and misperceptions that surround nonviolent change – and how people around the world are proving that nonviolent action is powerful, practical, effective, and successful. She will also explore how our society frames heroism in terms of violence or (rarely) nonviolence, and why such narratives matter deeply to human existence in these times of vast change. Lastly, looking at the historic and contemporary canon of examples of nonviolent struggle, Rivera will invite the group to consider what might happen culturally if our folktales and popular entertainment embraced nonviolence as a central theme of what we pass on through story.
